How to Play GunZ: The Duel in 2026 (Steam Remaster Starter Guide)
Getting In
GunZ: The Duel relaunched on Steam on August 13, 2026 as a free-to-play remaster by Masangsoft. Install it from the official Steam page (no purchase, in-app cosmetics only), create your mercenary, and check your in-game mailbox — the launch Welcome Reward and the 200,000-wishlist milestone reward are delivered there automatically during the launch event window (through October 6, 2026).
If the client patch hangs on first launch, the official fix is simple: fully close both Steam and the game app, then restart them. Launch week saw connection congestion; a day-one patch and NA server expansion already addressed the worst of it — our server status page tracks anything ongoing.
Your First Loadout
You equip two weapons plus a melee weapon and consumable items. For your first hours:
- Shotgun + Revolver + Sword — the forgiving all-rounder set
- Keep medkits in your item slots for Quest (PvE) runs
- Do not buy cosmetics before you know which weight class suits your style
The Modes
- Duel / Deathmatch rooms — the classic 1v1 and free-for-all experience
- Team Deathmatch — where most casual play happens
- Gladiator rooms — community rule set: swords only, no guns
- Quest mode — co-op PvE waves with boss encounters (see our Quest guide)
The Honest Part: Movement Is the Game
What made GunZ legendary is not the shooting — it is K-Style, the movement system built from dash, jump and slash cancels (butterfly steps, slash shots, wall cancels). Veterans returning after 20 years will feel at home immediately. New players should expect a real learning curve: the basics take an evening, fluency takes weeks.
Start with our K-Style hub, learn the butterfly first, and practice in empty rooms before you queue into duels. Losing to someone flying around the map is a rite of passage — every veteran was on the receiving end once.
